10 Ways to Make a Good Salad
Last weekend, one of my close girlfriends invited me to join her at Trader Joe's. I had been wanting to go for so long, so I could not pass up the opportunity to try them out for the first time! I joked with her about how four and half aisles could create such a buzz! Anywho, in the produce aisle we both confessed that we do not always finish the salads we buy and unfortunately they go bad and we waste money. To hold each other accountable, we decided to do an "eat salad every day" challenge!
We are several days into the challenge now and others have joined in! Salads are a delicious and healthy way to eat, but they can also be boring if you make them the same way all the time.
Here are 10 ways to make your salads more interesting and flavorful:
Use a variety of greens. Don't just stick to iceberg lettuce. There are many other types of greens that are delicious and nutritious, such as spinach, kale, arugula, romaine, and radicchio.
Add colorful vegetables. A salad should be a feast for the eyes as well as the taste buds. Add a variety of colorful vegetables to your salad, such as tomatoes, cucumbers, carrots, peppers, and onions.
Include some fruit. Fruit adds sweetness and freshness to a salad. Try adding berries, melon, or apples.
Add nuts and seeds. Nuts and seeds add crunch and healthy fats to a salad. Try adding almonds, walnuts, sunflower seeds, or pumpkin seeds.
Go for protein. If you want your salad to be a meal, add some protein. This could be grilled chicken, fish, tofu, or beans.
Make your own dressing. Store-bought dressings can be high in fat and calories. Make your own dressing at home with healthy ingredients, such as olive oil, vinegar, and herbs.
Season your salad. Don't forget to season your salad with salt and pepper. This will help to bring out the flavors of the other ingredients.
Toss your salad just before serving. This will help to keep the greens crisp.
Garnish your salad. A little garnish can make a salad look more appealing. Try adding a few sprigs of herbs, a dollop of yogurt, or a sprinkle of cheese.
Have fun! There are no rules when it comes to salads. Experiment with different ingredients and combinations until you find what you like best.
Following these tips will help you to make salads that are delicious, nutritious, and satisfying. So get out there and start experimenting! Don't forget to post your salads and tag me on instagram to join the free challenge!
